Opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has renewed his call for a nationwide caste census. During a recent discussion with former UGC chairman Sukhdeo Thorat, Gandhi highlighted the struggles of Dalits and marginalized communities for equal access to governance, education, and resources. His remarks have sparked a fresh political debate, with the BJP strongly opposing the move.
Rahul Gandhi emphasized that a caste census is necessary to uncover the extent of social and economic inequality in the country. “The caste census will reveal the reality of inequality and discrimination faced by marginalized groups,” he said. Gandhi argued that such data is essential for creating policies that ensure fair distribution of resources and opportunities.
During his conversation with Thorat, Gandhi pointed out the systemic barriers faced by Dalits and other backward classes. Supporters of the caste census argue that it is a vital tool for understanding the socio-economic status of various communities. India’s last caste census was conducted in 1931, and since then, there has been no comprehensive data on the population and conditions of different caste groups.
Experts like Sukhdeo Thorat have long advocated for a caste census. They believe it would help identify the most disadvantaged groups and tailor policies to their needs. “Without accurate data, it is impossible to address the deep-rooted inequalities in our society,” Thorat said.
