In a surprising revelation, Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli has hinted at the possibility of coming out of T20 International (T20I) retirement for one special occasion—the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics men’s cricket final, should India reach the summit clash. Kohli, who retired from T20Is after India’s triumphant T20 World Cup victory against South Africa in Barbados, made the announcement during the Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit, powered by Leaders.
Cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics marks its return to the global sporting event after a 128-year hiatus. For Kohli, representing India in an Olympic final and potentially winning a medal is a dream worth reconsidering retirement. He expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “If India reaches the Olympics final in 2028, I might just think of coming out of retirement for that one match. Winning an Olympic medal would be magnificent.”
Kohli’s Fitness Journey and Commitment to Excellence
“My transformation came after a few tough tours when I saw the guys lasting on the field longer than us. From the team’s point of view, things were not tough, but convincing my mum was challenging. She thought I was looking sick. I told her that the world is talking about my training methods, and I am not sick. I felt that I was able to do things much better,” Kohli shared.
His commitment to fitness has not only extended his career but also made him a role model for aspiring cricketers. By maintaining peak physical condition well into his late 30s, he underscores his relentless pursuit of excellence. This level of dedication makes a potential Olympic return an exciting possibility.
Kohli’s recent performances have been nothing short of spectacular. During India’s victorious ICC Champions Trophy campaign in Dubai, he amassed 218 runs in five matches at an impressive average of 54.50. His match-winning century against arch-rivals Pakistan and a crucial 84 against Australia in the semi-final played pivotal roles in India’s triumph.
As he gears up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, Kohli has joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad. The franchise shared a video of Kohli posing in the RCB jersey, captioning it, “The King is here, and like always, he’s two steps (sometimes a LOT more) ahead of everyone.”
RCB, under new skipper Rajat Patidar, will open their campaign against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens. With Kohli in the lineup, the team’s chances of securing their maiden IPL title look stronger than ever.
A Legacy Beyond Cricket
Kohli’s potential return for the 2028 Olympics highlights his enduring passion for the game and his desire to achieve new milestones. Winning an Olympic medal would add another glittering chapter to his already illustrious career, further cementing his legacy as one of cricket’s all-time greats.
As fans eagerly await the 2028 Olympics, Kohli’s announcement has added an extra layer of excitement to cricket’s historic return to the global stage. Whether or not he takes the field, his commitment to pushing boundaries continues to inspire millions worldwide.
