TVS Orbiter: Affordable, Feature-Packed & Ready for Urban India

TVS Motor Company recently unveiled the Orbiter, its most accessible electric scooter aimed at first-time urban buyers, priced at ₹ 99,900 (ex-showroom, inclusive of PM E-Drive subsidy). Positioned below the iQube in TVS’s EV portfolio, the Orbiter blends minimalist style with practicality and smart features to cater to daily commuting needs.

Design & Comfort

The Orbiter’s aesthetic is clean and purposeful. A large body panel stretches from front to tail, with LED headlamps set above a DRL-equipped apron. The upright posture, 845 mm flat seat, and a 290 mm straight footboard deliver comfort for two riders even on long rides. TVS’s use of a 14″ front wheel (largest in class) and a 12″ rear enhances stability on rough urban roads, while ground clearance around 169 mm ensures easy navigation over potholes.

Battery & Performance

Powering the Orbiter is a 3.1 kWh lithium-ion battery delivering an IDC-certified range of up to 158 km per charge—meeting the needs of most Indian city commutes. Real-world usage may yield 120–150 km depending on riding style and terrain. The hub-mounted BLDC motor (≈ 2.5 kW/3.3 bhp) enables a top speed near 68 km/h and 0–40 km/h acceleration in about 6.8 seconds. Telescopic front & dual rear suspension, drum brakes with CBS, regenerative braking, and a kerb weight of ~112 kg complete the specification sheet.

Charging takes roughly 4 hours to reach 80%, with potential for fast-charging though official numbers are yet to be confirmed.

Smart & Safety Features

Orbiter is loaded with segment-first tech: cruise control, hill-hold assist, reverse parking mode, and motor cut-off on fall offer convenience and safety. Its 5.5″ coloured LCD cluster connects to the smartphone for navigation, call/SMS alerts, battery monitoring, geo-fencing, live vehicle tracking, and OTA updates—essential tools for modern riders.

Practicality & Value

Under the seat lies a generous 34 litres storage, enough for two helmets. The scooter rides on tubeless tyres, offers USB charging, and supports crash/fall/anti-theft alerts via the companion app. Available in six dual-tone shades—Neon Sunburst, Stratos Blue, Lunar Grey, Stellar Silver, Cosmic Titanium, Martian Copper—it appeals to a wide demographic.

Positioning & Market Strategy

TVS aims the Orbiter at urban first-time EV buyers looking for reliability, affordability, and smart riding features. With the iQube already established in the mid-premium segment, Orbiter complements rather than cannibalizes sales—TVS’s executive confirms both models target distinct audiences. Manufactured alongside the iQube at the Hosur plant, TVS invested around ₹ 125 crore into its development; initial deliveries are rolling out from Bengaluru.

TVS continues to lead the Indian electric two-wheeler market (~25% share in August 2025), ahead of competitors like Ather and Ola, benefitting from supply chain resilience despite rare-earth magnet shortages.
