As monsoon winds pick up momentum across the west coast of India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Rainfall Alert for Goa and multiple districts across Maharashtra. A developing low-pressure system in the East Central Arabian Sea is behind this uptick in weather activity, bringing intense downpours and sparking red and orange alerts across the Konkan region.
🌧️ What’s Happening?
According to IMD, a low-pressure system has formed off the North Karnataka-Goa coast, and it’s expected to intensify into a depression. Though a cyclone has not formed yet, meteorologists are monitoring conditions closely, as the system could evolve further.
This weather development has already brought heavy rainfall to the region. On Thursday, Panjim in North Goa recorded 9 cm of rain, and forecasts suggest even more significant precipitation is on the way.
🔴 Red Alert in Goa – Till May 25
Goa is under a red alert until Sunday, May 25, signaling extremely heavy rainfall that may cause waterlogging, disruption of transport, and potential flooding in low-lying areas.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured citizens via social media that the State Disaster Management Authorityis fully operational with 24×7 control rooms in both North and South Goa.
