On the seventh death anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Union ministers, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid heartfelt tributes at his memorial, Sadaiv Atal, in New Delhi. Vajpayee, a towering figure in Indian politics, was not only a respected statesman but also a poet, visionary leader, and a reformer whose policies shaped modern India.

PM Modi’s Tribute

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote:
“Remembering Atal Ji on his Punya Tithi. His dedication and spirit of service towards the all-round progress of India continue to inspire everyone in building a developed and self-reliant India.”

The Prime Minister highlighted Vajpayee’s lifelong commitment to national service and credited him with inspiring the vision of a Viksit Bharat (developed India).

Vajpayee’s Political Journey

Atal Bihari Vajpayee served as Prime Minister of India three times — briefly in 1996, and then from 1998 to 2004. His six-year tenure is remembered for political stability, bold decisions, and transformative reforms.

Known for his moderate stance and ability to build consensus, Vajpayee steered the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the fringes of Indian politics to the center stage. His leadership combined statesmanship with a human touch, making him one of the most admired leaders across party lines.

Architect of Economic Reforms

One of Vajpayee’s most significant contributions was his push for economic reforms. His government accelerated liberalization policies, promoted foreign investment, and modernized India’s infrastructure. The Golden Quadrilateral highway project and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana improved connectivity and boosted rural development.

These initiatives laid the foundation for India’s growth in the early 2000s and continue to impact the nation’s development trajectory.

Vision for a Strong and Self-Reliant India

Vajpayee believed in balancing economic growth with social harmony. He emphasized good governance, transparency, and the need for a self-reliant India long before the phrase Atmanirbhar Bharat became popular under PM Modi’s leadership. His commitment to national security was evident in the Pokhran-II nuclear tests of 1998, which established India as a nuclear power while maintaining a responsible global image.

Vajpayee the Poet and Orator

Beyond politics, Vajpayee was a gifted poet and a powerful orator. His speeches, delivered in his distinctive style, touched millions and are remembered for their clarity, conviction, and emotional depth. His ability to combine poetry with politics set him apart as a leader with a humane and philosophical outlook.

Legacy That Lives On

Seven years after his passing, Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s legacy continues to inspire leaders and citizens alike. His vision of inclusive growth, democratic values, and a self-reliant India resonates strongly with the aspirations of today’s youth.

By paying homage to Vajpayee, PM Modi and other dignitaries not only honored the former Prime Minister but also reminded the nation of his enduring contributions. Vajpayee’s principles of nation-building remain relevant as India works towards becoming a global power in the 21st century.
